When I feel the fishing is good is when I can be consistent and catch fish every day. This year has been one of those years where they all seem to come on one day. Today was one of those days. My desire to spread my catches out has not been the norm this year. Today we took old friend Harland Cadinha and his friend Neil”Dutch” Kuyper looking way offshore due to a really fast current inside to look for life offshore. This time of year the life comes from the outside and the frigate birds and bait is often just outside of our range of the normal day. We went bird pile to bird pile and found good signs of life catching shibis when I saw a splash to the outside. It turned out to be the far dolphin pod that we always dream about finding. We made our first pass and got a single and missed it. Seconds later we got a double and landed both of them. Mat got 2 lures in the water and we went for our second pass. Mat and I were busy and Harland said” Guys there is a Marlin Back there” We looked up in time to see the 650 plus pound fish eat the jet we had short. Neil fought the fish for 35 minutes and we had her close. We put the drag up and up trying to get her before she died. It felt like it was foul hooked by the way she pulled and acted. Mat almost got the leader twice and each time she dove out of reach. The second dive she didn’t go far before we rolled her over and she started coming easy. Neil wound up the line that came, I bumped it ahead to get some angle and Mat got ready to get the leader when the darn hook pulled. It was seconds from the tag but didn’t get caught this time. Neil did a great job on the fish and it was really fun to chase that fish around. In hind sight I should have taken more time. We ran back to the school where we landed 3 more nice tuna before we had to run back to get Harland to the airport. The strikes and fish we missed to get the five was incredible. The fish were so aggressive they were totally missing the lures. The ones we caught we saw line up on the lures like a marlin and bite. Awesome! One of the tuna had a partner following it up while we had the leader. Today was a great day of fishing and will go down in my book as one of the best days of the year.
