Earl and Pam Warren came to Kona in search of the spearfish that are common to Kona this time of year. Going into the week we were optimistic due to the numbers that were here at the end of January. True to form the spears disappeared right before we started. I kept in touch with other captains that were out and they told me that they hadn’t seen them for a week or so. Worried as usual on a species hunt we started out. We caught a stripey right away first thing in the morning. It was a juvenile 25 pound fish. That is a good sign because the spears like hanging with them. We wooed hard in the area and found one. We got it to the chair and we were part way there. Could it be we would get the pressure off the first day? Too good to be true? Yes it came off. We stayed late with no other bites.
